Steven Melka
Steven R. Melka, 43, grew up in a family of hunters. He started tagging along with his father, Jerry Melka, duck hunting at 8 years old in the Theresa Marsh in Dodge County (WI) which he still does today. He started hunting ducks himself when he was 12 years old. Bow and gun hunting for deer, however, didn't start until he was 17 years old with his dad's recurve bow and a 12 ga. slug gun.
Being a family of hunters, they are a close family and time in the field together is always charished. He raised his son as a single parent with the help of his family and now Steven Jr is a great archer, winning several trophies throughout the years. Turkey hunting started, well, when the first season started in Wisconsin and he's gone every year since. As Steven puts it, "I mainly hunt Waterfowl in September and October, Bow and Gun Deer in November and Turkey in the Spring, every year. It's a passion for me."
Most of his bow hunting is on state land but with his cousin, Jeff Geddes, Steven's gotten to hunt the rut on private land for the past 8 years and it has grown into a tradition. Steven originally tried out for Battle of the Bow with Jeff and they started Battle Scraps together but Jeff is also battling Lyme's Disease so he had to drop out of Battle Scraps this year. He will be back in business next year but certainly misses the woods. Steven ended up offering the opening to a long time friend, Bill Miller, who also comes from a hunting family who accepted it with excitement. "They talk about hunting all the time but have never hunted together so this should be challenging for both of us but I know we will have lots of fun with it," Steven believes.
Bill Miller
William J Miller, 41, started hunting when he was about 7. He would go rabbit hunting with his older brother Don. Around 12 he used his dads old recurve for the first time. Just going out with his dad was one of the biggest thrills as he grew up in a family of hunters. "I was lucky to be the last one to take my uncle Ralph out bow hunting the year before he past away and thats one I'll never forget", recalls Bill.
Bill was out of hunting for about 8 years at one point when his brother asked him if wanted to take up hunting again. He had every thing Bill needed so it was an easy decision. It since has been one of the best thing he's ever done as he got bite by the bow hunting bug hard. Now for the last 7 years he's gone every year.
Then when his partner Steve asked him to be on Battle Scraps with him, he jumped at the chance. "I've always wanted to film my hunts so this gives me the opportunity", states Bill. With the deer activity good he cant wait to get out there with Steve and get some meat… and maybe a nice buck too…oh and some video!
